The North Devon Athenaeum has an extensive collection of original documents. The collection includes;

• The Harding MSS, which consists of notes and articles about Devon places and families.
• The W R Lethaby collection of notes and drawings by one of the Arts and Crafts Movement’s leading lights.
• The Barnstaple Turnpike Trust Collection.
• The Bruce William Oliver Collection which includes several architectural notes on various places within North Devon.
• The Literary and Scientific Institute Collection which includes some of the records of the North Devon Atheaneum’s forerunner.

• The Lynton and Barnstaple Railway Collection
• The Harper Collection, which contains several scrapbooks and notes on Barnstaple and North Devon.
• Several collections which include title deeds, wills and other notes and documents relating to the people and places of North Devon.
