The North Devon Athenæum holds a large collection of more general interest books which are of use to both local and family historians alike.  There are a large range of books which cover the military services, emigration and transportation, transport, how our towns and villages developed, and how our ancestors lived.

There are also histories of most of the countries in the World as well as a large collections of histories of England and the UK including histories of and old guides to the various counties of England and Wales.

Thurloe State Papers, the State Papers of Henry VIII and the Calendar of State Papers for various dates are also available.

Almanacs, the Illustrated London News and the Gentleman’s Magazine also make up a part of this collection and can be very useful for finding where or how our ancestors lived.

Along with various books on pottery, coins, furniture, clocks, literature, the arts, sport and more, the collection gives a good insight into the past and the life our ancestors lead.
