Family History Sources

North Devon Athenæum volunteers and staff have, over the years, produced several transcripts of North Devon parish registers.  This includes the Barnstaple Parish Registers from 1538 to the 1960s and 70s.  There are also transcripts of the 1841 and 1901 censuses for the North Devon area.  All the transcripts are available on the main shelves.

Memorial transcripts cover various North Devon parishes and list the memorials on the gravestones in parish graveyards.  Indexes to these are available on the main shelves with the other transcripts.

The North Devon Athenæum has a copy of the General Register Office of Births, Deaths and Marriages Index from England and Wales on microfiche covering the period from September 1837 to the end of December 1983.  This enables searchers to apply for an ancestor’s birth death and marriage certificates at Registrar offices and the General Register Office in Southport.

The North Devon Athenæum holds several books and files on various North Devon families both big and small.  The pedigree (or family tree) collection is constantly growing and the North Devon Athenæum always happy to accept new files.
